6 BOCNEWS.com DECEMBER 2017 Reacting in an Active Shooter Situation Our world has become more violent in recent years, especially in public spaces such as con- certs, restaurants, schools, shopping malls, super- markets, workplaces and lately churches. Be sure to identify secondary exits before trouble occurs and always be aware of your surroundings. An “Active Shooter” is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. Most of the time they use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active Shooter situations are unpredictable and quick. These incidents are usually over with- in 5 – 15 minutes. Be prepared as best as you can both men- tally and physically to deal with this type of situation. ■ ■ Be Watchful ■ ■ If you are in an office, stay there and secure the door ■ ■ If you are in a hallway, get into a room and secure the door ■ ■ As a last resort, try to take the active shooter down – throw something at him or use an improvised weapon. ■ ■ Call 911 when safe to do so – helpful information includes location of the shooter, number of shooters, physical description of shooter, type of weapon and number of victims. If you cannot speak, leave the line open so the dispatcher can listen. ■ ■ As a general rule: EVACUATE, EVADE , ENGAGE It may be a good idea to carry your ID, cell phone and keys on your person. When an area becomes a crime scene you may not be allowed back into the area to get your personal belongings anytime soon. When law enforcement arrives, remain calm – their purpose is to stop the active shooter as soon as possible. They may use pepper spray or tear gas to control the sit- uation, shout commands or push individuals to the ground for their safety. Follow their instructions and let them do their job. You may be held in a safe location until everything is under control and all witness- es have been identified and questioned. Do not leave until instructed to do so. You may never be involved in a mass shooting – but these horrible events have been hap- pening more frequently. Think about your response. Have discussions with your family, friends and co-workers. Have actions plans and know your escape routes. Take a First Aid course, a reality based self-defense class or learn to shoot and get a concealed weapons permit. Be safe, be secure and always pray.
