The Queen can make some people MBE: Member of the British Empire. A national award. Especially if you are from a West-African coun- try, I won’t mention the name, they love titles. OFR. GFCR. You wonder what the meaning is of the name. VIP. Verger born in Power. They love titles, and your name can become great by conferment. The Greatness of Jesus’ Name A. Jesus’ Name Includes all Three It’s not very often that you find somebody that crosses two. But Jesus crosses the three. His Name was great, number one, by inheritance. His Name was great by conferment. It was conferred—a Name was given to Him that was greater. Number three, His Name was great by conquest, by what He achieved. And those are the three areas we want to look at today. So, in whatever area you want to use the Name of Jesus, it works! His Name is effective in three worlds, the Bible tells us. His Name is effective and pow- erful in the heavens, His Name is pow- erful and effective on earth, and His Name is effective and powerful in hell. So, in three worlds. Now, every other one I’ve told you about, their name is only effective and powerful in a sphere, in a part of the earth. Bill Gates: in the computer realm. The Queen: in the Commonwealth. And even in the Commonwealth now they are dumbing it down so fast, that only Canada, the Islands, Australia, New Zealand, and then you know the Caribbean, those are the ones where they can say, “The Queen is coming, everybody." If you go to some other Commonwealth country and say, “Queen is coming,” and they say, “Which one? Queen who? Queen Latifa?” So, let’s look at how Jesus obtained an excellent Name. How did you get your own name? I know how you got your name. Many of us, includ- ing me, got our name conferred on us, bestowed on us by our parents. Is that not true? They were the ones who gave you your name. How many of you renamed yourself afterwards, and that’s what you are bearing right now? The only person who named himself, and that’s the name we are calling him is Bishop Julius. You know Bishop Julius Abiola? Julius was not his name that his parents gave him— he gave himself ‘Julius’. His name was an exotic name so he had to rename himself ‘Julius’. So, I put ‘Caesar’ at the back of it, and he doesn’t like me to call him ‘Julius Caesar’. But other than that, everybody goes about with their own name. Another person that named himself is Yonggi Cho. I think Yonggi Cho started with Paul Yonggi Cho, then he ended up with David Paul Yonggi Cho, because he read about David and he loved David. But I don’t have any prob- lem with the name David; I love the name David. But I love Adekunle bet- ter. Because that’s what my parents thought would suit me. My point is this: many of us are bearing our name because our par- ents named us. There was a lady when we were in college, her name was Billykissu. That’s a true story. She changed it to Billy, but I knew her because we came from the same street—we grew up in the same street. So, I never called her ‘Billy’ I called her ‘Kissu’. And she would be so mad at me; she would throw water at me in a cup, and I would say, “Hey, Kiss.” She would say, “You’ve started again.” She didn’t like the name. How many of you would have preferred another name than the name you are bearing right now? You won’t let anybody know so that they won’t tease you. B. Jesus’ Name Great by Inheritance Jesus’ Name was conferred to Him as well, but I want us to start with inheritance. How did He get an excel- lent Name by inheritance? Hebrews 1:1-6. This is very important, because this is what gives you the power to use that Name. “God, at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. Who, being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than angels as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” By inheritance He obtained a more excellent Name than they. “For to which of the angels did He ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begot- ten You.’ And again, ‘I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son.’ But He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him.’” Notice verse 4. “He became so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance, obtained a more excellent name.” He inherited a greater Name than any angelic being. He inherited it. We know that Jesus is the Son of God, and Jesus is the heir of all things, but when did He inherit the most excellent Name? How did He inherit anything in heaven and on earth? Let me say this to you: this is not what the Bible is saying. The Bible is not saying that He inherited that name in heaven before He came to the earth. No. When He came to this earth, He already had everything. He didn’t come with a big name, the Bible even says, “He laid aside all His honor and all His glory.” He laid them aside. So, it cannot be that He came from heaven, because He was the Son of God, that’s why He obtained the most excellent Name, you know, like Prince Charles. How do you become Prince Charles? Can any of you be Prince Charles? Yes, you can be Charles, and in fact you can be Prince Charles, but not with the same weight. So, He didn’t come to the earth with all this regalia and paraphernalia of a great name. No. He was born in the manger. He laid aside all His honor and glory. When then did He inherit His Name? Let’s find out. Hebrews chapter 1 that we are reading verses 4 and 5 tells us, “Having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance, obtained a more excellent Name than they,” and watch this now: “For to which of the angels did He ever say, 'You are My Son, today I have begotten You.’” 1. Today Today. So, if we want to know when He obtained a more excellent Name, we need to find out when is that ‘today’ that He was begotten? Are you fol- lowing me? We realize that He didn’t inherit that Name from heaven. It’s not because He was the Son of God and He Continued on Page 12 Faith pt iv ... from pg 6
