4 BOCNEWS.com JANUARY 2018 Dr. Sharon Bailey, was among those recognized with the Green-Garner Award by the Council of Great City Schools at their annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio. This is Green- Garner Award is the highest honor given to urban educators in the nation by the Council of Great City Schools. Sponsored by the Council, ARAMARK Education and Scholastic, Inc., the Green-Garner Award is the named in memory of Richard Green, the first African American Chancellor of the New York City school system and Edward Garner, businessman and for- mer School Board President of the Denver Public Schools, respectively. The Green-Garner Award acknowledges our nation’s best urban educators, who make a positive difference in the education of today’s urban school students. School district board members and superintendents are recognized, “For showing a strong dedication to the needs of students, a profound commitment to improvement, and have exemplified significant community involvement and leadership”. Dr. Bailey served as an elected member of the Denver Board of Education from 1989-1995. Since leaving the Board, Dr. Bailey has continued to be a staunch educational advocate and works for more equity and opportunity for all students. Dr. Bailey is one of the most respected educators in Colorado, and this Great City Schools recognition is one more acknowledgement of how important her work is to urban education, students, teachers and families. In 2015, Dr. Bailey was commis- sioned by the Denver Public Schools to conduct a qualitative study to iden- tify issues impacting the experiences of African American educators and students in the Denver. Known as the Bailey Report, the study identi- fied numerous issues related to hostile working and learning environments, diversity, inclusion, implicit bias, cul- tural competence, achievement and opportunity gaps, as well as the impact of systemic racism. As a result of the Bailey Report findings, the Denver Public Schools Board of Education authorized district staff to establish an African American Taskforce which examined the issues and made rec- ommendations to the Board on how to achieve greater equity for African American students and educators. Bailey commented that, “It was an extreme honor to be recognized by the most prestigious urban education organization in the nation. I am hum- bled and know that I am standing on the shoulders of several of my mentors including Dr. Rachel Noel, Omar Blair, Senator Regis Groff, Edward Garner, Dr. Evie Dennis and others, who have made significant contributions to the struggle for educational equity in the city of Denver and state.” Dr. Bailey received her undergradu- ate degree from Princeton University, her Masters and her Doctorate from the University of Colorado. She has worked as a policy analyst at the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE), as a mem- ber of the Executive Team in the Office of the Denver Auditor, and is currently employed as a Program Manager with the Denver Public School’s Culture, Equity and Leadership Team. Dr. Bailey, an anthropologist and a highly effective school educator, has done extensive research on K-12, higher education, desegregation, and mul- tiple issues impacting children and families. Dr. Bailey is also the author of the Gaining Ground in the African American Community: Investing in the Black Community as an Investment in Colorado.
