The parade of recent shoot- ings has the potential to off-set years of progressive civil rights accomplishments intended to unite a nation divided by race and economic disparity. As a nation, we find the clock wind- ing backwards escalating offenses between our community and our government, resurging racial ten- sions between blacks and whites, and exacerbating adversarial conten- tions between people of color and police. The leadership of Denver’s African American Community is not divided and stands in unison with Black Lives Matter 5280 on matters that raise the issue of un-fair policing standards. The past two years have shown us that unfair practices have led to unlawful profiling of black men, women, and black youth. We stand with Black Lives Matter 5280 on matters regarding the unneces- sary use of force when engaging citizens of any race. And most im- portantly, we stand against char- acterizations in the media that the Black Lives Matters is a terrorist organization while dismissing the attention and defense the movement brings to the plight of Black People living in America today. We want to make it clear that while we seek justice on the issues as stated we do not condone any citizen taking up arms as a means of retaliation against police or our government. We do not condone aggressive actions that would pro- mote separatist ideals. We do not condone violence in the place of advocacy for thoughtful resolu-tions. As stated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out dark- ness, only light can do that and hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Our ideals are driven by the light of justice that has no boundar- ies or borders but intrudes upon the darkness of injustice every-where. The leadership of Colorado Black Leadership Caucus (CBLC), Black Lives Matters (BLM) 5280, city offi- cials and our law enforcement offi- cers must find ways to and common ground to prevent the unraveling of our working relationships, that were hard fought to build by so many great leaders before us. We suggest an immediate sit down between BLM leadership the Mayor, Chief of Police, and the Executive Director of Safety moderated by key leaders from CBLC and the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance (GMDMA) as a means to initiate immediate lines of communication. We suggest creating a Community Crisis Team from members of these community groups to work with the city to keep a channel of commu- nication open to stabilize unrest now and in the event of future crisis. We making a public statement to the media from the City, CBLC, GMDMA, and BLM 5280 after conversations to mediate issues of concern allow us to develop plausible outcomes for our community. We stand ready to work now, to insure that the people in our com- munity will remain safe and that concerns of our community will be heard. Jesus said, “Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in anger of the judgment.” Anger and being angry is dangerous business! As Believers our strongest weapon dur- ing these trying times is the power of prayer. Become active or more active with productive ways to address our concerns with non-violent ways to seek justice. Martin Luther King Jr. was an example of following in Jesus Christ footsteps. No matter how he was treated he marched for justice without violence. Most of all Jesus was crucified for us. They treated Jesus so cruel, but HE took it to save you and me. At any point and time Jesus could have come off that cross, He could have blink an eye and killed everyone, instead HE stayed non violent. He took the unjust to die for our sins. Let us remember 200 years ago Jesus settled case. All lives mattered to HIM. He die on that old rugged cross for all lives. I want to encourage each of you today to use our most powerful weap- on, the weapon of prayer, role up your sleeves turn your plate over and fast a few hours or a few days as we come together on one accord to stand in the gap for others during this sensitive time with ongoing injustice in this dark, dark world we are living in. test demands a higher form of being. Nobody wins by replacing lawlessness with chaos. In order for justice to exist, some justice has to exist. God will give us opportunities to be just. Are you free to choose?
