23 DECEMBER 2018 BODY OF CHRIST NEWS The Impact of a Spiritual Mentor: Remembering Bishop Dennis Leonard Iremember the day I met Bishop Leonard like it was yesterday. I was at the National Gospel Music Workshop of American Conference, that year it was held in Atlanta, GA. One of the gospel announcer asked me “are you with Bishop Leonard?, that's the only other folks here I know from Colorado.” I made sure once the Gospel Announcer Guild went on break that I would stop by Bishop's booth. I got the pleasure of meeting Bishop Leonard and several staff members, they were shocked like me, we were both from Colorado! When he learned that I was a gospel radio announcer, he wanted to see where the announcers were meeting. He came back with me to the conference room where all the GMWA Gospel Announcers were meeting. the late Bishop Hobbs president of the GMWA Gospel Announcers Guild had everyone stand and acknowledge Bishop Leonard. When I was walking Bishop Leonard back to his booth he said to me. I need you on my team! Please call me Monday to schedule an appointment. That was the beginning of a huge impact on my life with a spiritual mentor and friend. After the GMWA conference, I did met with Bishop & Lady Michelle prompting Bishop Leonard to say "can you say you start this week, I need what you to become my Public Relations Director. I was so excit- ed about the opportunity, meeting Lady Michelle, Garret and Mark was just as important. Both Bishop & Lady Michelle took the time to get to know me and about my life. In my lifetime up until now Bishop Leonard & Lady Michelle made a profound impact on my life. Only 3 people have made a huge impact on my spiritual life; Bishop Dennis Leonard, Lady Michelle and Prophetess Juanita Bynum. We all need spiritual mentors in our Christian walk and I can truly say Bishop and Lady Michelle were. My first week was getting to know and understand the vision Bishop had for the church, the goals he wanted to accomplish through me for the church and his ministries as the Bishop. What stuck with me the most was his main statement the he lived by and stood for; "We have been called & commission to win souls for Christ. Part of my job was to introduce to some and pres- ent to others in the national & international gospel industry to Heritage Christian Center Choir who had just produced their hit single "Everybody Ought To Know." Being involved with the choir's project was one thing, but to work directly with Bishop's minis- try & Lady Michelle's ministry & growth of Legacy Publishing & the authors who published with Legacy such as; Bishop Thomas Weeks, Darlene Bishop, Marylin Hickey, Darrly Brister just to name a few, was not just a job but an honor and privillage, & such a blessing to work with such mighty men & women of God. All because Bishop saw talent in me and gave me the opportunity to be apart of his executive team and ministry. I had the pleasure of traveling with Bishop & Lady Michelle, on occasions they treated me like family, when traveling we always met prior to breakfast and had group prayer and every night after dinner we had group prayer before heading to our rooms. Lady Michelle would bless me by sowing into my life with beautiful suits and shoes... now ya'll know they were always sharp because she is a sharp dresser herself. Bishop would often say to me and Garrette "you two argue just like real brother & sister now stop it." Bishop Leonard was the kind of pastor who would touch your heart. After preaching the major- ity of the time he would leave from the pulpit and go stand by the front entrance doors so he could shake hands with members and guest as they were leaving the church. During his illness he never threw a pity party... he stayed on the move embracing people, giving guidance, praying for others and continue to be the preaching man he was called to be. He would say; "God use me until you use me up..." When my hus- band and I started our church in Castle Rock we had the sign in our main front window..."All Sinners Are Welcome" that sign Bishop Leonard had on Heritage made an impact with me and many, many others. I can truly say I know I'm not the only one who had great memories, life lessons learned, spiritual guid- ance and the true meaning of a friend with Bishop Dennis Leonard, He touched many lives, because he was about Our heavenly Father's business; winning souls for Christ. It's not good bye Bishop but I'll see you later. Merry Christmas... Our Saviour is born......remem- bering the true meaning of Christmas! Rev.
