10 BOCNEWS.com DECEMBER 2018 "And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." — Galations 6:9 In 1984, I felt compelled by news reports to make a trip to a far-away country to make a contribution along with others to help out in meeting the needs of a country struck by a famine and disease. The country was Ethiopia, in east Africa. It is estimated that this famine caused about 1 million deaths. I went with me wife and 2 young children and we were there until 1987. They were in a relatively safe place in the capital city of Addis Ababa. I traveled to one of the centers of the famine to attempt to help out. I worked in a clinic in a city called Mekele which was 313 miles away by air. In this clinic we gave medical care and fed the malnourished children and adults as best as we could. We gave out blankets and clothing, treated as indicated those who needed medication, and treated the malnourished with a special biscuits and bowls of cereal. We saved many lives by this simple treat- ment. One unexpected thing that occurred is that we were changed forever by this experience. My wife although she did not travel where I was, had to send me supplies and she took care of our 2 children ages 5 and 10. I was separated from my family in Addis Ababa for a total of 6 months. It turned out to be a family affair. Believe me, we were never the same after the three years we spent in Ethiopia. When I returned from Ethiopia, I went to work in Denver for Kaiser Permanente in the area of Internal Medicine. However, I felt compelled to do what I could do to help those in our community with the great- est needs. I wanted to work with relatively needy people in our society. I heard about a clinic which really helped those in our community who lacked insurance, or had Medicaid, or were just needy. This clinic was the Inner City Health Center now on 3800 York Street in Denver at the present time. They have a siz- able group of volunteer medical providers, including physicians and nursing person- nel. They serve those who have no medical insur- ance using a sliding scale payment system. The also have patients on Medicaid, Medicare. and private insurance. They have a worker who is dedicated to help those who need help get- ting public assistance such as Medicaid and is an expert in this endeavor. The Inner City Health Center has a dedicated group of work- ers I can say. They provide the following type of care: pri- mary medical care for adults, those with medical illnesses such as hypertension, diabe- tes, or acute episodic illnesses and more. Care for expectant mothers, dental care, pediatric care for children, and mental health counseling are available. We have access to medical and surgical sub-specialists such as in eye care, orthopedics, cardiology, and general surgery and others. Proof of citizenship is not needed, and it is possible to converse with the staff in more than 8 languages. This is a faith-based clinic I have had the privilege of volunteering once weekly at the Inner City Health Center for about 10 years and I plan to continue as long as possible. (KJV) And God spake all these words, saying... 1. 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and Keep my com- mandments. 3. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 4. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thy shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant , nor maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 5. 12 Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 6. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 7. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 8. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 9. 16 Thou not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 10. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neigh- bor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant , nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.
