7 AUGUST 2018 BODY OF CHRIST NEWS Volunteering for Summer Fun To set the scene in the book of Mark 10:41-45- James and John asked Jesus if they could be sit on his right and left sides in glory this is what happened next. “When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise author- ity over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Colfax Avenue is the doorway the Rocky Mountains the longest continuous road in North America. In its glory days of the 1930s and 40s families and GI’s alike would find their way to West Colfax to the very pleasant “Motor Motel’s” such as the Sands, The Driftwood, the Carriage House or even the Aristocrat Motor Hotel on West Colfax. The east-west passageway was lined with family motels. However, as time would have it; things change the celebrated “Motor Motels as they were referred to became victims of the times; becoming a crime and drug infest- ed sites of uncleanness and they fell into despair. As with many things a new impression can brighten up a cloudy day and give hope to many. Such is the case of the Aristocrat Motor Hotel on West Colfax. The Volunteers of America (VOA) has transformed two Family Motel and works with the Denver Department of Human Services to form a motel atmosphere with a human ser- vices flavor. The Volunteers of America Family Motel served over 5,000 people in 2017. The Motel is fully operational and maintains 40 rooms for families and indi- viduals specifically for use by the Denver Human Services. The Motel reserves 30 rooms for families and single women who receive a vouch- er from the City of Denver for up to a 21-night stay. A second com- ponent includes 10 “respite rooms” with two men or women in each room. Megan Harding, a Volunteer Specialist of the VOA, writes- “Thank you so much for coming out to our Family Motel and hosting a Carnival! We have had the best feedback from our clients; they absolutely loved it.” “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your sub- ject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in phys- ics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. FREE EVENT CALENDAR Block Party AUG 4 — Saturday Annual Neighborhood Block Party 10am - 1pm. Everything Absolutely FREE!
