19 OCTOBER 2017 BODY OF CHRIST NEWS Living Boldly Montview Distinguished Lecturer November 4-5 Explores ‘Living Boldly with Compassion and Justice in Uncertain Times’ Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St, will host theologian and author Rev. Dr. Teresa Fry Brown Nov. 4-5 to discuss what it means to live a prophetic faith in modern soci- ety. Brown, a professor of homiletics at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, will lecture at 9:15 am Saturday. Then, a panel of Denver religious leaders, moderated by Montview co-pastor Rev. Clover Reuter Beal, will respond. “Prophetic work means dismantling all that contradicts God’s imperatives of individual and community whole- ness,” Brown explains. “It is commit- ting to the never-ending work of engag- ing others about injustice in the sacred quest to move towards God’s beloved, inclusive and global community.” “Our faith tradition speaks from out- side the circles of power,” notes Beal. “The Bible includes radical voices call- ing us to remember the widow and the orphan. Often at great personal sacrifice, prophets hold up a mirror to the com- munity and asks questions we would rather not hear.” A goal of the weekend is to foster relationships with clergy and laity from across Denver’s religious communi- ties about what it is to be a prophetic voice in our contem- porary political and national climate. Montview Church has spent the last year examining white privilege and racism in small groups and wants to expand the dialogue with other members of Denver’s faith community. “At this profound time in our nation’s his- tory, Montview has the opportunity to create the space for a dialogue,” said Montview co-pastor Rev. Ian Cummins. “We know what it means to have challenging conversa- tions where we disagree and still hold each other with respect.” On Sunday, Nov. 5, Brown will preach at both the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services. During the adult educa- tion hour at 9:30 am, she will give an introduction to Womanist Theology. The weekend concludes with a lun- cheon at 12:30 p.m. followed by a dis- cussion with Brown.
