The issue here is more about unmitigated parenting power. Who regulates the single parent when they get-out-of-line especially with the influence to change behavior? No matter whether the single-par- ent is a man or woman the issue is that individuals have flaws. And if no other person in the household is able to check the other parent on their injustice or anger, then the children just have to endure the pain. Children are going to mess-up at times and parents are going to be inadequate at times but with unregulated inadequacy the children often lose. The bad news is that when these kids lose they just suppress the anger or injus- tice and end up directing it toward some other poor soul who doesn’t have pent-up hostility at the school grounds. So, who really loses? As a therapist, I have been treat- ing many adolescent Black males who have been marched into my office saturated with anger, hostil- ity, frustration and they’ve shut down to adults whom they deem unapathetic to their humanity. Don’t get me wrong, I thank God for those mothers and fathers who do get help for their children because there are too many others who won’t. So instead of address- ing the problem too many will chose “denial and avoidance!” The point is angry, hostile and femi- nized adolescent Black male syn- drome comes from somewhere! All activity in the universe func- tions on a law of physics known as cause and effect. You don’t have symptoms or pathology without the presence of something that is caus- ing it to manifest. The plea here is for Black parents to re-examine the use of negative energy such as aggression, anger, worry, fear, etc. as a valid form of parenting or even as a valid form of responding to life’s challenges. We’ve been doing anger and fear and worry for centuries and all it’s gotten us is first in all the bad sta- tistics and last in the good ones. At some point we need to change the ideas that govern how we live life and stop following Western culture into the abyss of materialism, vio- lence and escapism.
