Considering Jones spent a majority of his life home- less and living on the streets in Miami, Fla. “My homelessness was by choice. But you have to change your environment which is the first step,” he said. Jones did move from Miami to Orlando but found himself back on the streets and hanging with the same drug crowd. He finally made the choice to change his life and moved to Colorado. He worked for some non-profit agencies and worked with the homeless. And people listened to him because he told his story and walked in their shoes of having nowhere to go. “That worked for me to move to another state. But you have to change your environment,” stated Jones. “If you live in Denver move to Englewood. If you live in Aurora move to Lakewood.” Now Jones is owner of the Anointed BBQ restaurant off Hampden and Federal in Sheridan. Jones found that his other passion was cooking. He learned to cook at the early age of eight because his stepfather made him cook. “My stepfather was an alcoholic. He would place a stool in front of the stove so that I would cook or he beat me,” Jones said but also later learned cooking tips from his grandmother. As he is often called “Mo” ( Maurice Jones) is proud of the many southern soul-delicious dishes served at his res- taurant – from ribs, brisket, catfish, chicken, hotlinks, pulled pork, bar- beque pig feet to fried green tomatoes. Again, Anointed BBQ is located at 2504 W. Hampden Ave. in Sheridan. The restaurant is opened from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The phone number is 303-781-5757. Dress for Success is an organization that has four cornerstone programs that empower and transform women’s lives. “Their programs help find women positions that offer a livable wage and a career path; programs that help them keep their jobs, succeed in both life and work and provide a road- map for giving back to their communities.” Dress for Success is a major emphasis of TLOD’s Status of Women Thrust. This thrust includes community partnerships that assist women with the skills needed to build confidence to accomplish their goals through pro- grams including; Back to Work seminars, Dress for Success, Job Corps, Entrepreneurship workshops and Job Fairs. These two organizations are perfectly suited for advancing the cause of women in their pursuit of success in their profession and life.
