Excel Institute kicked off its 2nd Annual Campaign event this month in order to help raise funds to keep their doors open. This year’s theme: “Continuing the Legacy in Changing Times.” The guest speaker was newly elected State House Rep. James Coleman. Coleman himself was a graduate of Excel Institute. The school needs children, said Vivian Wilson, administrator at Excel Institute as part of the reason behind the campaign fundraiser. With other charter schools also with- in the same area makes it difficult to continue getting new enrollment. “Having about 10 schools within a seven to 10 minute proximity makes it difficult, especially with us being a tuition-based school, “she said. The monthly tuition rate is $300 at Excel Institute. There are scholarships available for students whose parents can’t afford the tuition. “We still allow those student to come in. It’s part of our ministry,” added Wilson. “Our salvation is students who have gone to our school and bring back their children to attend. The legacy only happens when someone contin- ues to maintain it.” Even some before and after school programs that should have been elimi- nated remain intact. Staff, teachers and parents have volunteered their time so the programs continue. “Enrollment has been the lowest in history since the school opened back in 1983,” explained Wilson as it has been difficult in keeping the school’s doors open. It was visionary Rev. Andrew L. Bowman who strongly believed that the church must give to the community that laid the founda- tion of the school opening. Wilson said she has approached other churches and even gone to the Greater Denver Ministerial Alliance seeking financial support for the school. Excel Institute educates those stu- dents from four years old up to the eighth grade and is located at 3050 Richard Allen Ct. in Denver, next to Shorter A.M.E. Church.
