Flora Young, a retired educator and pastor’s wife, is the first in her family to graduate from college. She holds a Masters degree from the University of Colorado in Humanities, and currently works as the Youth Coordinator at Macedonia Baptist Church where she is responsible for the outreach and inward growth of children ages 6 to 18 while chal- lenging each of them to be a difference in this world. Born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Lady Flora is active in music ministry statewide, nationally, even as far as Italy! She and Rev. John J. Young, of Macedonia Baptist Church, have been “an item” for over 47 years and are the parents of three children and four grandchildren. Naturally, her volunteer positions have ranged from yard work as a child, to Youth Activities, from Children’s Church, Children’s Choir, Bible Fair, Overnight Sleepover, Mission Activities, and Bible studies to picking-up and tak- ing children home. Oh, and teaching children to play keyboard, percussion and learn music history and theory. Lady Flora’s church work involves: The Mass Choir, Teaching Sunday School, Board of Christian Education, as well as serving as an officer in the Deaconess Board, Denver Council of Ministers’ Wives Ministers’ Widows, and she somehow finds time to be a PTA President, Den mother for Boy Scouts; writing poetry; crossword puzzles, author, Toastmaster, GMWA vocalist, and actress. She was also honored by the City & County of Denver in 2007 when Mayor John Hickenlooper declared May 23, 2007 to be Flora Young Day. Simply put, her motivation, says Lady Flora is “My love for God, young people and people in need. Because many of our youth are lost, they need role models who love them and will challenge them to be the best person they can be.” Applauded by Sisters Enterprise for performing massive random acts of kindness wherever she goes in great abundance, this woman of God says that we should conduct random acts of kindness “because we are children of the Most High God, and were created in His image. Because God wants and expects us to help other people so that those in need are being cared for, our self-interests should not be above the interests of the people.” In order to maintain her positive attitude, Flora Young con- fessed that she studies her Bible regularly and prays constantly while seeking God’s will, His way and His purpose in all that she does. Sister Flora’s heroes/mentors include her grandmother - Trudy Manor; her pastor’s wife (when she was a child) - Blanche James; her Mother – Adella Carter- Moton; and poet - Maya Angelou.
