8BODYOFCHRISTNEWSAPRIL2014MaryBlackmonisthecurrentPresidentCouncilfirstelectedin2012oftheDahliaSquareSeniorApartmentsonElmStreetwheresheisaresident.BrandeMicheauCityCouncilAidewhoattendssomeofthemeetingsheadedbyMs.BlackmonhadmentionedthatCityCouncilwouldwelcomemoreparticipationfrommembersoftheseniorcommunityattheAnnualHiawathaDavisLuncheon.Itisafreeluncheonincelebrationofhislegacy.MsBlackmonbelievesitisperhapsthemostprestigioussocialeventoftheyearforseniors.Ms.Blackmonimmediatelybeganlookingforpeopleshecoulddependupontohelpher.Sherecruitedatotalof15peopletobeontheplanningcommitteestartingwithsomeatDahliaSquareSeniorApartmentsandbranchingouttoothercontactswithintheseniorcommunity.TheeventwasheldonDecember192013from1100a.m.to100p.m.attheDoubleTreeHotelandwasattendedby626peopleinclud-ingChiefWhite.TheseniorsenjoyedbeingservedbymembersoftheFireDepartmentPoliceDepartmentandSheriffsDepartment.Ms.BlackmonspokeontheLuncheonsthemeASeasontoRemember.MistressofCeremonieswasTraciWinchester.Dr.NitaHenrywasaspeaker.KeithJoinerManageratthenewWalgreensat35thandColoradoBlvd.wasalsochosentospeak.AtthesuggestionofCouncilmanAlbusBrookshehadpreviouslyreachedouttotheseniorsinthecommunityaskingfortheiropiniononproductshisstoreshouldcarry.SisterClaudetteSweetsangtheNationalAnthem.TwoAnnualAwardswerepre-sented.TheLifetimeAchievementAwardwenttoHazelWhitsettwhohasbeeninaleadershippositionwiththeWomensCenterfor25yearsandalsoworkedforoneofourSenators.Shehasgivenmuchofhertimeandservicetothecom-munity.DixieTrimblereceivedTheUnsungHeroAward.EachsummerattheCityParkPavilionshehoststheKingTrimbleSummerTeaforseniorstohonorherlatehusband.WantingtobringentertainmentaswellasspeakersintotheeventMs.BlackmonapproachedPastorArmingtonfromtheCentralBaptistChurchwhogavehisapprovalfortheirpraisedancegrouptoper-formattheLuncheon.Theseniorswereveryenthusiasticaboutthepresentation.Ms.BlackmonhasreceivedverypositivefeedbackfrommembersofCityCouncilandpar-ticipantsattheluncheon.Shelooksforwardtothepossibilityofplan-ningtheHiawathaDavisLuncheonfor2014aswell.Retiredsince2006fromtheUniversityofColoradoHealthSciencesCenterMs.Blackmoncontinuestousehercommuni-cationsandorganizationalskillsonbehalfofseniors.RecentlytheMajorsattheSalvationArmyRedShieldaskedhertobetheirSeniorProgramCoordinatorwhereshewillorganizeactivitiesforseniors.MaryBlackmonsaysMypassioninlifeistoelevatethespiritsoftheseniorpopulationatDahliaSquareSeniorApartmentsandwithintheDenvercommunityatlarge.AnnualHiawathaDavisSeniorsLuncheonaSuccessMaryBlackmonMypassioninlifeistoelevatethespiritsoftheseniorpopulation.10thAnnualCommandersofTheRiteBanquetElvinR.CaldwellJr.VicePresidentoftheDenverCommandersoftheRiteannouncedthehonoreesforthe10thAnnualCommandersoftheRiteBanquettobeheldonSaturdayMay3rdat600pmattheDoubletreeHotel32ndandQuebec.JamesEnglish33masonandamemberofMtn.PlainsConsistory33andMrs.FreddieCoreneWhitneymemberofMtn.PlainsAssembly49arebeinghonored.MembersoftheCommandersoftheRiteareall33masonsthehighestlevelinmason-ry.Thebanquetwasstartedin2004byElvinR.CaldwellJr.33TomLewis33OsieWinds33andthelateBillWooden33.COMMUITYJamesEnglish33leftMrs.FreddieCoreneWhitneyright
